Event Information

The UWSP’s production of The Tender Land by Aaron Copland is a moving and charming opera (with orchestral accompaniment) that paints a portrait of American rural life just after The Great Depression.  The story is centered around the life of the Moss family whose daughter, Laurie, is about to graduate from high school in the fall of the year, immediately before harvest time when two homeless drifters, Top and Martin, are hired to work to help bring in the harvest.   During a celebratory dance where Laurie and Martin fall in love and plan to run away together, rumors swirl about the drifters’ backgrounds, and accusations of rape are levied against the two men who try to leave town before the sheriff arrives.  First produced at the New York City Center of Music and Drama in 1954, The Tender Land is a coming of age story for young Laurie, it examines xenophobic behaviors in small towns and it addresses the pains and anxiety of parents whose children fight against them as they forge their own path in life.
